World Hypoparathyroidism Awareness Day Announcement

The Hypoparathyroidism Association, Inc., in cooperation with The Hypoparathyroidism (HPTH) UK, The Nordic HPTH Organisation, The Bahrain Hypoparathyroidism Society, and InSeNSU, are pleased to announce they have designated June 1st as the World Hypoparathyroidism Awareness Day.  It is our hope this important step will help increase public awareness of hypoparathyroidism, a rare medical disorder which affects approximately 4 out of 15,000 people worldwide.

Hypoparathyroidism is a condition in which the body secretes abnormally low levels of the parathyroid hormone (pth). This hormone plays a key role in regulating and maintaining a balance of the body's levels of two minerals — calcium and phosphorus.

Patients with hypoparathyroidism are often misdiagnosed by physicians who often do not understand the disorder or know how to properly treat it.

Designating June 1st as World Hypoparathyroidism Awareness Day gives the Hypoparathyroidism Association, Inc. and the other HPTH Associations around the world an opportunity to tell our story and will also serve to help patients diagnosed with the disorder to educate themselves and others about it.

The Hypoparathyroidism Association, Inc. will host the 5th International Hypoparathyroidism Patient Conference in Rockville, Maryland on June 2-4, 2011, at the Washington D.C./Rockville Hilton Hotel in Rockville, Maryland.  For more information about this conference please see our website at www.hpth.org.
